Danish Court Sentences Nonviolent Activists Arrested During Protests Against UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009:  Free Speech Criminalized

Today, the Copenhagen District Court found Stine Gry Jonassen and Tannie Nyboe guilty in charges of being organisers and instigators of violence and vandalism. The incident took place on 16th of December at Bella Center last year during the climate summit in Copenhagen. The two women were sentenced to four months of probation. One of the judges disagreed with the verdict and thought the accused should be freed of all charges.

Stine Gry and Tannie Nyboe both acted as spokespersons for the Global
Network “Climate Justice Action” (CJA) and Stine was accredited as an official UN Observer through Global Justice Ecology Project.  Both Stine and Tannie are members of Global Justice Ecology Project’s New Voices on Climate Change program.  Find their bios by clicking here

During the Cop15 last year, CJA organised several non-violent civil
disobedience protests, including the “Reclaim Power – Push for Climate
Justice” rally on 16th of December. The two women were both the public
facesof the movement and they are now found guilty in charges of being organisers and instigators of violence and riots. They are both deeply shocked by the outcome of the trial and are now considering an appeal.

Stine Gry considers the whole trial absurd:

*“There has been a clear political rationale with these trials. It is
obvious that Tannie and I were accused because we acted as public faces of the movement. This trial sends a significant message: if you have the nerve to stand up and express a critical point of view of society, the authorities will do whatever they can to silence you. It is absurd that a large public movement as CJA is criminalised because they – as one of the few – dared to criticise the ongoing climate negotiations during the summit; especially in the light of how poorly things turned out with the negotiations and how criticisable Denmark’s role was. The verdict is a defeat for democracy because it hinders politically engaged people in using their democratic right to demonstrate and express themselves critically.” *

Tannie explains:  *“It** is an evident political attempt to limit the opportunity to criticise the negotiations during the summit and the whole bedrock of the climate process. The right to demonstrate is an
essentialpart of democracy, despite it is the existing political
system that is being criticised. I really hope that people will still use their democratic right to express themselves critically, though one might risk being accused personally by the court. However, I fear that this case will scare people from protesting and organising themselves politically in the
future. Consequently it is just as big a defeat for the political work and democracy in Denmark,as it is for us personally.”

*Background:*

Climate Justice Action (CJA) is a global network of social movements and groups, which mobilised and called out for protests during the climate summit in Copenhagen in December last year, in order to challenge the insubstantial political negotiations at the Bella Centre and demanding just solutions to the climate problems. On 16th of December, CJA organised the demonstration “Reclaim Power – Push for Climate Justice” to give voice to the people mostly affected by climate changes – the same people who were not heard inside the Bella Centre.

At the time, Stine Gry and Tannie were spokespersons for the movement and argued for the right to protest and for the freedom of speech. They are now found guilty in planning the “Reclaim Power” demonstration and of plotting violence against an official in function, of severe vandalism, of serious disturbance of public peace and order, and of illegal trespassing. Several hundred people were arrested in relation to the action, but none of these have since been accused anything illegal.

The trial of the two spokespersons took place in Copenhagen City Court on 6th, 27th, and 28th of October 2010 at 9.30 AM.

Emergency response action at U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy’s office in Burlington, VT protests the Israeli government’s violent attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla

In Senator Leahy's office, Vietnam veteran Dave Ross, from the Will Miller Green Mountain Veterans For Peace, expresses his outrage to the violent killings of the solidarity activists. Green Mountains Vets for Peace officially added Will Miller's name to their group after Will left this Earth in 2005. Will was an original board member of Global Justice Ecology Project. Burlington, VT– An emergency response action at U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy’s office in Burlington, VT took place yesterday protesting the Israeli government’s violent attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla.  Over 50 people went into Sen. Leahy’s office and spoke to Leahy’s VT Director, Chuck Ross.  They demanded that all Israeli aid from the U.S. ends until Israel: -releases the 6 ships and frees the passengers; ends the blockade of Gaza; ends violent acts against civilians and ends the occupation of the Palestinian territories and the Golan Heights.  At least five peace organizations organized the protest including Vermonters for a Just Peace in Palestine/Israel, International Socialist Organization, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Pax Christi Burlington and the Peace and Justice Center.

Protesters also told Leahy’s spokesperson that the solidarity ship, The Rachel Corrie, is headed toward Israel and strongly demanded that Leahy makes sure no action is taken against that ship.  The Rachel Corrie is owned and operated by the Irish arm of the Free Gaza Movement named for Rachel Corrie.  Rachel was an American member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) who was killed in the Gaza Strip by an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) bulldozer on March 16, 2003 while attempting to prevent IDF forces from demolishing the home of a local Palestinian.

Senator Leahy's Vermont Director, Chuck Ross (right), tells demonstrators that he is not Leahy so there is nothing he can do but pass the protesters wishes to the Senator. Chuck Ross then congratulated the protesters for their "good" behavior in the office and that is the way voices are heard. (Note: In all fairness it should be pointed out that in other parts of the world there have been clashes with police, etc. over the killings, and those voices evidently have been heard and have made major international media.) Reclaim Power! Mass Street Action Announced in Bella Center

Global Alliances Announce they will Protest 15 Years of Failed Climate Negotiations with Mass Non-Violent Civil Disobedience

At a press conference today inside the Bella Center, home of the COP 15 negotiations, civil society groups allied with the Climate Justice Now! (CJN) and Climate Justice Action (CJA) networks announced their plans for tomorrow’s Reclaim Power! demonstration, a confrontational mass action of non-violent civil disobedience.

Today representatives of CJN and CJA declared that given the urgency of the climate crisis it is time for dramatic action to expose the COP process as undemocratic, unjust and inadequate to deal with the scale of the problem. The purpose of this action is to reaffirm the historical responsibility owed by the North to the South for the climate crisis and focus on alternative solutions such as local sustainability and food sovereignty which consistently take a back seat to the “market-based solutions” hyped in the formal negotiations.

“Over the last 15 years, the COP process has been corrupted by corporate money and the refusal of the rich countries of the world to take responsibility for the problems they have created. At a very fundamental level, we need to talk about how we leave fossil fuels in the ground, but no one is talking about that inside the talks in Copenhagen,” said Ivonne Yanez of Accion Ecologica, which is a part of Climate Justice Now!

The action called for Wednesday December 16th will involve groups of activists simultaneously descending on the Conference centre from different starting points. The march will have 4 blocs: a general Blue Bloc led by movements from the Global South, a Green Bloc which will be a more mobile unit, the Yellow Bloc for those NGOs accredited to the COP15 but unable to access the meetings because of the secondary badge restriction and a creative Bike Bloc.

At noon, they will join up with the mass of people walking out of the climate talks, to hold the ‘Peoples’ Assembly’, a participatory platform of marginalized voices and real solutions to climate change.

“We have no more time to waste. If governments won’t solve the problem then its time for our diverse people’s movements to unite and reclaim the power to shape our future. We are beginning this process with the people’s assembly. We will join together all the voices that have been excluded-both within the process and outside of it. We will be both non-violent and confrontational. We will not let fences and physical barriers stand in our way, and we call upon the police to respect our right to make our voices heard.” said Stine Gry, a representative of Climate Justice Action.
